on a cat tribe I saw that it is really dangerous to flush cat feces, landfill doesn't sound great either. I know I can compost the feces, but what are the opinions/ experiences? can I put it in with everything else? clumping litter with pee ok? should i be worried about pathogens etc in the finished product?

Re: cat pee and poo
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 1:11 PMwe compost ours. it works fine except..... the pee clumped up in the clay, it seems to stay clay, and does not mix well into the other compost -

Re: cat pee and poo
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 6:38 PMI use pine shavings as cat litter and have a separate compost bin just for that. The pine takes a long time to break down, though. Almost no smell. That was a relief.

Re: cat pee and poo
Mon, August 27, 2007 - 10:42 PMWoah. I would be worried about pathogenes or who knows what. When in doubt keep it away from your food. You can definitely compost it but keep the compost away from your veggies. I also believe that excrement from a carnivor can go rancid. Not something you want in your compost pile.
If you are trying to just get rid of it, try a compost digester. Just a simple bottemless can in the ground with an airtight lid. It creates an anerobic process which effectively breaks down the waste and assimilates it into the soil... I wouldnt recomend doing much else with it, maybe burry it in a flower bed?
Animal and human feces is definitely iffy.
Why is it dangerous to flush, btw?

It had always been my understanding that if you do "hot" composting, carnivore and human feces were ok, but if not, then not. Was that incorrect? Definitely you want to make sure that you are interrupting the life cycle of any relevant parasites. -

Re: cat pee and poo
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 1:11 PMstephanie: yes, I think you are right about the "hot composting" killing the harmful bacteria. I have a 50's book which explains the in's and out's, as that was still done more often then.
But the problem is, that it is never evenly temperatured, there may be spots which got missed, didnt quite reach the length and height of temperature.. and I guess it would just take one nasty little virus to make you sick..- so it is generally recommended not to do it if you will use it on land where you spend time, or harvest anything.
For a flower bed etc, I dont see why not however..
I like the idea of a separate bin, where you have control over when it gets lifted, and where it goes exactly..

Re: cat pee and poo
Tue, September 4, 2007 - 3:57 PMI have heard that toxoplasmosis - the nasty thing that keeps pregnant women from changing the cat box actually can live through the water treatment process and affects sea mammals, esp. otters. -

toxoplasmosis
Tue, September 4, 2007 - 4:30 PMOh i see, i can believe that. I've heard that other things like heavy metals and birth control medication also finds its way on the output of our waste treatment. Waste treatment is a field that has fallen way behind the times.

Re: cat pee and poo
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 8:15 AMThere's more than one use for compost. There's the stuff we put on the veggie garden, and there's the stuff we put on the ornamentals.
Besides, toxoplasmosis already exists in most garden soil, along with plenty of other pathogens. Dirt is not sterile. Also, you don't even want to know what's in the water you use on the garden.
Ours tests positive for coliform at least once a month. The well water is even worse.
There's been junk in the soil forever, and we humans still survive. -
