Small Scale Compost

topic posted Sun, March 30, 2008 - 5:17 PM by  g
I'm looking to start my own compost at my apartment. Can anyone recommend a good small scale compost system? I have a backyard that I can use, but i'm not sure about making any large structures. Ideas?

Thanks!

I have personally found that the bucket type system works great...

I read some other posts about trench composting or just burying organic matter in the garden... so throw it in the bucket, then bury it? SImple as that?

also if you have a yard, a nice sheet mulch around whatever you have planted will decompose organic material very fast a couple of reasons why this is good. 1) increases moisture helps organisms (bacteria, worms, etc) thrive 2) ants will take the stuff into their homes (little underground compost bins, and the nutrients enter the aerated soil 3) it is better than trenching (when applicable) because it does not disturb the mychorrhyzal connections in the soil.

so put down a thick layer of straw, not hay (has seeds), and place food scraps under it. a good resource for simple at home stuff is Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemmingway. I recommend it all the time.,

        hope this helps

I keep a 1-gallon bucket on my counter, and when it's full, I bury it in the back yard. Been working for me for about 3 years. In winter, i just throw it in a heap, and bury whatever hasn't decomposed when I turn over the earth for spring.
